Say cheese: new photography studio opens in Bear River
Plan is to rent out space to other artists, create artistic ‘hub’
Michael Carty is celebrating the opening of his new photography studio in Bear River, but it won’t just be used for taking pictures.
“I have a couple different ideas of what I’d like to do with this space,” he says.
He plans to rent the space out to other artists. They can use it as a photography studio, art gallery and instructing space or for local businesses looking for a meeting space.
“I want this to be a hub to help make the industry stronger,” he says.
The Smith’s Cove photographer has been taking photos for over a decade and professionally for close to six years. He previously had a studio, but for the last two years he’s been working out of his home.
Now he’s happy to be back in an actual studio.
The studio is located at the Oakdene Community Centre in Bear River and the grand opening was on April 25.
He chose Bear River because of the artsy community.
Carty shoots all kinds of photos, including bridal, portraits, events, corporate photos and headshots. But he enjoys getting the opportunity to get creative.
“I like to be creative and try to provoke emotion,” he says.
He doesn’t have one favourite part about photography, but the creativity and connections he makes with people are close to the top of his list.
“It’s all about connecting with people through your work. Every person has their own perspective,” Carty says. “I could look at a photo and think one thing, but someone else may look at it and think something completely different and that’s okay.”
