SOUTHALL, Joseph James – We are saddened to announce the passing of Joseph Southall at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa on Friday, March 16, 2018 peacefully with his family by his side at the age of 64. Son of the late Clive and Frances (Grimes) Southall. Joe leaves behind his loving wife and soul mate of 30 years Marilyn Southall (Nickerson) who held his hand to the end; two precious little dogs Anastasia and Louis; loving step father of Michelle Cleveland (Charles), Comeau’s Hill, Nova Scotia and Kempton Goodwin (Denise), Clark’s Harbour, Nova Scotia; step grandchild­ren Samantha (Mark), Kamden, Katin, Kazleigh and great granddaugh­ter Blake. Brothers, Steve (Barbara), Ellershous­e, Nova Scotia and Mike (Cindy), Kentville, Nova Scotia; nieces, Victoria (Casey) Weaver and Katie Southall; nephews, Matthew, Thomas and Daniel Southall; great uncle to Hailey and Dominique. Born in Montreal, moved to Windsor, Nova Scotia where he grew up. Joe graduated from Dalhousie University in 1973 at a young age and soon after graduation joined the Fish Inspection Branch, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Halifax, NS. He quickly promoted within the Fish Inspection Branch and transferre­d to Barrington Passage NS as an area supervisor. He was later promoted again to a position of area inspection chief in the Yarmouth Area Inspection office. In the mid 1980’s Joe accepted a position in the Regional Inspection office, Halifax NS. Joe stayed in Halifax for approximat­ely 10 years. As a result of a re-organizati­on within the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Fish Inspection Branch of the Department was separated from the Department and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) was formed.
