The Osprey Arts Centre in Shelburne is launching “Periwinkle,” a seven- event series of world and classical music with a quartet from San Franciso and a chance to win dinner for two at the Quarterdeck.

It all starts on Saturday, June 9, at 8 p. m. with the Friction Quartet from San Francisco. At this concert, the Osprey will launch its promotional partnership with the Quarterdeck Restaurant in Summerville.

Audience members are encouraged to pick up a Periwinkle Card at any of the first four shows in the series (or at the Osprey during box office hours). All those who attend at least four of the seven events with their Periwinkle card will have their name entered into a draw for dinner for two at the Quarterdeck.

The Friction Quartet, whose performances have been called “terribly beautiful” ( San Francisco Classical Voice), “stunningly passionate” ( Calgary Herald) and “chillingly effective” ( San Francisco Examiner), has set a goal of modernizing the chamber music experience and expanding the string quartet repertoire.

Through arrangements of pop music, the use of digital sound processing, percussion, amplification, movement, and by combining music with other media such as dance and film, the Friction Quartet challenges the audience’s understanding of what a string quartet can be.

On June 19, Maritime Concert Opera returns to the Osprey with La Bohème by Puccini. This Lunenburg-based company brings concert performances of great operas to communities across Nova Scotia.

Next up on June 23 is a big Scottish traditional ensemble – the Caledonian Orchestra – performing classic marches, strathspeys, jigs, reels, laments and waltzes.

Appearing with the orchestra is the Caledonian Dancers to liven up the evening even more with traditional highland dancing.

July’s Periwinkle event is the ever- popular Best of Boxwood show on July 29. A mix of roots and folk music with an overlay of classical is always played with the precision and technique of classical by musicians from around the world.

On Sept. 16, an all- male choir, most of whom also play a musical instrument, performs sea songs and shanties.

La Nef will perform music from England, Scotland, Ireland, the Americas and the Caribbean.

The Orchid Ensemble returns to the Osprey on Oct. 6 with music performed on ancient instruments. Their repertoire ranges from the traditional and contemporary music of China, world music and new music to jazz and creative improvisation.

Hailing from Montreal, the four- piece Ensemble Les Songes, specializing in Baroque and Renaissance music, wraps up the Periwinkle series on Oct. 19.
