A councillor in the Municipality of Argyle says people are complaining about flies in the Lower Eel Brook area and she hopes the municipality will look into the matter.

Nicole Albright, who represents District 5 – which includes Lower Eel Brook – raised the issue at the Municipality of Argyle’s regular council meeting of June 12.

“It’s a real nuisance,” she said of the fly problem.

She said she doesn’t know what’s causing it.

“That’s why I wanted to bring it up ( at council), to see if we can kind of investigate to see what could be causing it. It’s something I’m going to put on the agenda ( for a future meeting) so that we can look deeper into it,” she said.

She said she would like to find out if other areas are having problems, consider potential causes and see if there’s anything that can be done.

“In the spring and summer, you want to be able to go sit outside and enjoy your surroundings,” she said.

But by the sound of things, flies are preventing people from doing that.

“They can’t open their windows, they can’t go sit on the deck,” Albright said. “It’s a nuisance, for sure, and if there’s some kind of a solution, it would be great to be able to find it.”

At last Tuesday’s council session, Argyle Warden Richard Donaldson said flies do seem to be worse this year.

And when we posted this story to our Yarmouth Vanguard Facebook page, people from many parts of the municipality said this is a problem for them as well.

Last spring this newspaper reported about a housefly problem that residents of Argyle, Glenwood, Bellville and Roberts Island said had been going on for years. Some residents said they couldn’t go outside their homes without being swarmed.

The flies were also a problem being reported at Nakile Home for Special Care.
