Digby Care 25 donates to Digby Elementary School

Support to help school with bike program

Digby Care 25 presented a cheque of $3,050 to Digby Elementary School to go towards their Spark Bike program.

“We are amazed by the size of the donation from Digby Care 25 and excited to place an order for more Spark Bikes,” said Sarah Price, a teacher at the school.

Digby Care 25 is a group of 103 women who meet four times a year to hear presentati­ons from local organizati­ons and groups. Each member makes a $25 donation and the funds are donated to the organizati­on the group decides.

Since the group started in 2014, they have donated $30,000 to Digby County causes.

On June 3, Digby Care 25 decided to donate to the Digby Elementary School.

In 2015 the school formed a team to bring Spark Bikes to the school. Spark Bikes are silent stationary bikes that kids can use in the classroom. Students are encouraged to self-regulate themselves to stay calm, alert and happy in classrooms.

“We have worked very hard to get donations and build support and education around the bikes and are at the point where we need to fill more classrooms to reach all students,” said Prince.

There are other similar care groups in the region. Other groups include the 100 Women Who Care of Shelburne County; 100+ Women Who Care of Yarmouth County and 100 Guys Who Share Yarmouth County. The members in these groups each donate $100 four times a year to groups and charities following a nomination process.

“When a student tells me that the bike is what makes them happy, I have to be thankful that I have that resource to offer them in our classroom,” said Prince.
