A bash-ful event
Digby’s Lobster Bash plans underway for 2019 after huge success this year.
The Lobster Bash is over for another year and now planning is in the works for next year.
Lobster Bash organizers posted on Facebook their appreciation to volunteers, sponsors, participants, special guests, entertainers, the Town of Digby and everyone who attended.
“Everyone seems to go beyond their expectations to make the Lobster Bash the success it has become.”
Thanks to the many sponsors of the festival, more than $18,000 worth of prizes were handed out.
The festivities kicked off with opening ceremonies, followed by the crowning of this year’s Lobster Bash Queen and King, Mykal Dugas and Kayden Porter.
Jean Brown took home first place in the lobster chowder competition. Bek Merritt of the Village of Mountain Gap came in second and Luke Mullen came in third. Celebrity guests Rick and Kelly Dale, and Rick Crane judged the competition.
The 3KM mud dash kicked off day two of the celebrations. Adult winners were Holly Hassellbring and Keaton Muise. Youth winners were Haven Bradley and Matteus Akin.
There was a children’s costume contest where kids had the opportunity to dress up in a mechanic themed costume. First place winner was Charlie Dugas, second place was Maeve Hersey and Kayden Porter took home third.
Winners of the amateur photo contest were Bernadette Boutil- lier with first place, Tim Jennings in second and David Burnie in third.
“It was hard picking only three winners because so many were great photos,” said Lobster Bash organizers in a Facebook post.
The rowboat races challenged teams to see who could row the fastest. Kelly and Dean Albright came in first place, Derek Collier and Pat Kennedy were second and Chris Thurber and John James claimed third.
Kevin Gidney took home first place in the rope splicing competition, followed by Kelly Albright in second and Pat Kennedy in third.
Kelly Allrbight won first prize in the rope coiling competition, second place was awarded to Dean Allbright and third to Pat Kennedy.
The survival suit competition was a big hit. Participants had to dress in fishing gear, take it off and put on a survival suit. John Banks had the quickest time, followed by Easton Addington and Sally Akin.
The trap stacking competition winners were Rylan Gloade, Travis Chute and Kelly Allbright.
There was a men’s and women’s lobster banding competition. Tamara Frost, Amanda Crocket and Sally Akin all placed in the women’s category. Travis Chute, Luke Wambolt and Easton Addington all placed in the men’s category.
Participants battled it out in the fish tub derby, trying to knock their opponents out of the tubs with a paddle. Frayne Kyte won first prize and Logan Carman took home second place.
Jarred Lowe and the boat Jacob’s Pride came in first place in the trap hauling competition. Dean Allbright with the Bay Challenger came in second and Mark Gidney with Jasmine and Hana 2016 were third.
Mark Gidney with the boat Jasmine and Hana 2016 won first prize in the parade of lights, while Jason Farstad and the boat Fundy Contender came in second.
Easton Addington won the Brenton Merritt Memorial Lobster Crate run for the last three years. This year, he ran a perfect run as a demo to show the other participants how to do it. Unfortunately, he was eliminated after falling on his actual run.
Three other participants all made it to the final timed round because they all had perfect runs.
The difference in between first and second place was three thousands of a second.
Fischer Kyte took home first place with a time of 15.93 seconds, Callum Longmire with second place and Zachary Allbright in third.
