Charges laid following standoff in Weymouth

A string of incidents in Digby County last week resulted in the arrest of three men by the RCMP on July 10.

According to an RCMP press release the alleged incidents started on July 8 in Weymouth when a person called police after discovering their vehicle had been damaged by someone allegedly firing a gun at it. In the early hours of the morning on July 10, the RCMP say a man then reportedly broke into the Weymouth liquor store and stole several bottles of liquor.

Later that day as the RCMP were investigating these incidents, they learned the men suspected to be involved were at a residence in the Weymouth Mills area. Police went to the scene where they say the men barricaded themselves in the home.

RCMP from Digby, Yarmouth and Bridgetown assisted with the situation, as well as members of the RCMP’s Emergency Response and Crisis Negotiator teams.

After several hours all three men were arrested without incident, according to the RCMP. Arrested were Marcus Bright, Anthony Scott Haynes and Tyler Colbert Langford. Charges before the court include weapons charges, possession of property charges and breach charges.

Sissiboo Road in Weymouth was closed for several hours as a precaution to residents in the area as the July 10 standoff unfolded.

On Facebook some people living in the area stated in comments that the RCMP were turning traffic away from the scene and detouring local residents through the Plympton area. People reported seeing a large police presence, with several RCMP cruisers on scene and the canine unit present.

A person, who didn’t want their name used, said what appeared to be a command centre was set up at the Weymouth fire hall. Some residents in the area said they kept their doors locked as a precaution as the incident unfolded.
