Matthew White and Mary Hill were first across the finish line in the men’s open and women’s open divisions to win the Nova Scotia Marathon on July 22 in Barrington Passage.

A field of 60 runners, including Jerry the sled dog, with his owner Brad Fraquhar, competed in the full marathon. With Jerry at the lead of a dogsled team, Fraquhar became the first Maritimer to compete in the fabled 1,000- mile Iditarod race last winter. The two have since been touring and speaking to school children throughout the province about the experience. It was the first time a dog has competed in the marathon with its owner.

Yarmouth’s Marco Albright posted a third-place finish overall in the full marathon. Also running from Yarmouth was Bobby Lou Reardon, who finished second in the female 50-59 division. Competing in the full marathon from Shelburne County were Chris Nickerson, Cape Sable Island, and James Stanley, Shelburne.

A total of 90 athletes competed in the half-marathon. Matt McNeil, Halifax, was first in the men’s open division. Paula James, Windsor, was first in the female open. Debbie d’Entremont, West Pubnico; Jill Surette, Coral Donaldson, all from Glenwood; Ian Cunningham and Shawn Muise, Yarmouth; and Shelburne County runners Colin Wickens, Michael McCarthy, Rick Crowell and Troy Flemming were among the other local competitors in the halfmarathon.

The 10K drew the largest field, with 98 runners completing the course, including numerous athletes from the local area. Scott Symonds, Halifax, and Stephanie James, Port Williams, were first in the men’s open and women’s open.
