Since last year the kites have been flying high at low tide in Belliveau Cove, Digby County.

What started out as Blerina Berberi and Kevin Tummers’ vision to see kites fill the air has grown into a weekly summer gathering of recreationalists, enthusiasts, first timers, spectators and all sorts of different kites.

Tide Kite Days have taken place for 20 Sundays now, with a scheduled kite day never having been missed.

The idea is to fly at low tide and take advantage of Belliveau Cove beach’s vast exposed sandy bottom which stretches 500 metres out. With the heat this summer, organizers say it is also a great way to cool off as the tide comes back in.

Kite flyers come from all over – in addition to locals, the events this summer have seen flyers from Europe, the US, Yarmouth, the Valley, Halifax, Calgary and more, reads a media release.

“It’s the core group of locals who really make the difference. Folks like Denis Blinn, Linda Saulnier, Klaus Heinz, Danielle and Paul Thibault, Lisa and Dave Doucette, and all the other great supporters from Belliveau Cove and the nearby villages,” the release continues. “We’ve had every age from 0-100 fly a kite.”

The remaining regular Sunday kit day is Sunday, Aug. 12 from 6-8 p.m.

The on Sunday, Aug. 19, there season will be closed out with the Tide Kite Fest – touted as a great big show of kites, local music, snacks and a community celebration. That will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

All kite days are free, kites are available on site for purchase or to borrow, or people can bring their own.

Organizers also extend special thanks to Ekphrasis Studio and Caisse Populaire de Clare.

You can also refer to the Tide Kite Facebook page for more info. Two more kite events are planned in Belliveau Cove this summer – a weekly kite day on Aug. 12 and a Tide Kite Fest on Aug. 19.
