The seventh annual Yarmouth Seafood and Wine Extravaganza starts serving local fare on Friday, Aug. 10 with the VON Surf or Turf dinner on the waterfront in the tent from 5 to 8 p.m.

Guests can choose from a lobster or steak dinner served with all the trimmings. There is musical entertainment at this event, which is a big fundraising event for VON. Tickets are available by calling 902742-4512.

On Saturday, Aug. 11, the Fish Fiesta happens in the tent behind Rudder’s Seafood Restaurant and Brew Pub.

This year’s community organizations include Knights of Columbus (seafood chowder); Le Village historique acadien de la NouvelleÉcosse (oldest recipe for seafood casserole in NS); the Tuna Museum in Wedgeport (shrimp skewers); the Acadian museum (steamed mussels); the Princess Tea (fish casserole); the Yarmouth County Mu- seum (steamed clams); TH’YARC (fish cakes) and the Shark Scramble (BBQ shark).

Seafood Extravaganza board member Carol Hill Bojarski says the event represents the non-profit organizations in the area and hopes people turn out to enjoy the food and support the various causes.

“Many other local organizations will be in attendance such as Song of the Paddle, Tusket Island Tours, local artists painting and showing their crafts and promoting their books all about life in our area,” she said.

Tickets are available on site. On Sunday, Aug. 12, at the Rodd Grand Convention Centre, three executive chefs will be presenting seafood demonstrations.

Chef Dale Nichols from the Digby Pines Resort and Spa will be working with scallops, using a recipe from his new cook book, Palette to Palate, which will be available at the event. The book was a collaboration between chef Dale and renowned artist, Lynda Shalagan.

Chef Cory McLaughlin from Hatfield House will be working with fresh local tuna.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #148 in Clark’s Harbour is initiating a banner project that will honour and remember local veterans of the Municipality of Barrington and Town of Clark’s Harbour and is hoping for a lot of involvement from the public.

“This is meant to be a positive project for the area. When I talk with people they get excited about it and see it as a very positive project and start talking about their own veterans and that is what we want to come out of this project. For people to start talking about our veterans.”

— Legion member Lynne Atkinson

The plan is for families to order a banner in memory of, or to honour, a veteran. These would be displayed from early to late November on pole brackets throughout the community. A similar project has been done in Colchester County and when legion member Lynne Atkinson saw a media story about it last fall “it struck a chord,” she said.

The legion members began discussing the idea and developing the project.

“We’re working to make it a very positive project,”

The third chef is a surprise duo that Bojarski says “will be worth the wait.”

There will be 15 restaurants represented at the event, serving a range of seafood items that will include smoked salmon, fresh salmon, oysters, bacon wrapped scallops, deep fried lobster tails, fish tacos and more.

Breweries are a great representation of the local community, says Bojarski, and will also be taking part. Rudders Brew Pub, Heritage Brewing Co., Tusket Falls Brewing Co., Boxing Rock and Roof Hound will all be represented. Beavercreek Winery, Casa Nova Fine Beverages, Petite Riviere Winery, and Grand Pre will be represented along with Still Fired Distilleries.

There will also be the introduction of chef Hana Tsunomata into the local restaurant world. said Atkinson. “We want to remember and honour our brave veterans. That’s important. We don’t want people to ever forget them and we want people to talk about our veterans. We want the younger generations to see the banners and learn about their relatives and other veterans in the area who served their country and who risked their lives. We want them to grow up knowing.”

The hope is to receive orders from families to have banners made for their veterans. The families will pay the cost of printing ($135). Atkinson noted this is not a fundraiser for the legion. The Municipality of Barrington and Town of Clark’s Harbour have both offered the use of their brackets already in place to hang the banners as well as the manpower to install the banners and take them down.

“We’re just thrilled about the help we’re getting from them,” said Atkinson. “They’ve been very supportive of the project.”

Atkinson said legion members will soon be putting posters up in various venues in the community as well as making order forms available. The banners can be ordered for any person living or deceased from an era who is considered to be a veteran, “so that covers a lot of territory,” said Atkinson, and includes conflicts or peace keeping missions, as well as the RCMP. Families will need to provide a photo that will be printed on the specially designed banner.

“This is meant to be a positive project for the area,” said Atkinson. “When I talk with people they get excited about it and see it as a very positive project and start talking about their own veterans and that is what we want to come out of this project. For people to start talking about our veterans.” The Fish Fiesta on Aug. 11 serves as an important fundraiser for non- profit organizations in the area.
