Tuna Fun Run goes Sunday, Aug. 19
Participants can choose 5K or 10K; ‘tiny run’ has been added as shorter option for kids
Runners and walkers are invited to help kick off the 2018 Wedgeport Tuna Tournament & Festival by taking part in the annual Tuna Fun Run, which will take place Sunday, Aug. 19.
Participants again will have the option of doing a 5K or 10K, with the start scheduled for 9 a.m. The course for all entrants, regardless of the distance, begins and finishes at the Wedgeport Tuna Museum.
This is the seventh year for the event, which drew 83 participants a year ago. Fiftynine did the 5K and 24 did the longer route.
“Most runners are from just around the area, not necessarily Wedgeport, but there is a lot from Wedgeport,” said Chloe Nickerson, special events co-ordinator for the tuna tournament.
People can pre-register for the run on Race Roster or at the Wedgeport Tuna Museum. There also will be a chance to register on the morning of the event from 8 to 8:45.
The entry fee is $20 (although there’s no charge for children 12-and-under) and the first 100 to register get a T-shirt. This year pre-registration also gives participants a shot at winning a Fitbit activity tracker.
Organizers have added a shorter option for those 12 years of age and younger and this one is billed as a “tiny run.” This one will start a little later in the morning.
“It’s free,” Nickerson said. “They start at the museum, just like the other race. However, they start at 10:30 ... and this one is only 600 metres.”
