At its council meeting on Sept. 4, Digby Town Council will be giving consideration to two bylaws – a vending and licensing bylaw and a public places bylaw.

The town says the objectives of the bylaws are to regulate vending and activities requiring licences in the town and to regulate public places within the town.

The draft bylaws are available for review at the town hall and also on the town’s website www. digby.ca.

The vending and licensing bylaw outlines provisions for vending, designated/ private spots; transient vendors, event vendors, the Farmers Market and yard sales, among other things.

It spells out requirements, enforcement, terms of licences, application processes and much more.

The public places bylaw defines public places within the town and how to recognize the designations. It also speaks to ensuring the lawful use and public enjoyment of public spaces, while also outlining what shouldn’t be happening in these spaces.

Some examples included in the bylaw are: no person shall use obscene language in a public place; spitting is a no-no; no person shall light or have a fire in a public place; no person shall camp or tent in a public place; no person shall sleep in a public place after dark; no person shall engage in aggressive or persistent begging in a public place; no person shall skateboard, roller blade, scooter or rollerskate in or on any part of Digby Centre Parking Lot and/or the Farmer’s Market Parking Lot, the Digby Tourist Bureau, the

Digby Band Stand and the Digby Boardwalk and Promenade, including sidewalks and curbs.

The draft bylaw also address the issue of loitering and damage to municipal property, among other things.
