‘It was the best experience’
Shelburne County athlete competes at national track event
A Shelburne County athlete says competing at a national track and field event was one of the greatest experiences of his life.
Taylor Goodick was one of 38 athletes on the Nova Scotia/ Nunavut Legion Team that competed on the Athletics Nova Scotia’s team at the Royal Canadian Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships in Brandon, Manitoba.
Goodick’s event was the jav- elin.
“The experience in my event was amazing. Great people from all over Canada throwing against me,” he says. “I threw 53.53 metres, which isn’t my best, but it did the trick.”
The throw seeded him in sixth place nationally in the event that saw 20 athletes competing.
Javelin is a sport Goodick takes seriously and excels at. His personal best is a distance of 54.32 metres. Goodick, who attends Shelburne Regional High School, placed third in provincials in javelin this past year. Last year he set a provin- cial record in Dartmouth.
To be selected for the Nova Scotia/ Nunavut Legion Team, athletes had to have competed at the 2018 Legion Selection Meet. A maximum of two athletes per individual event were selected for the team. It’s an experience Goodick won’t forget.
“It was the best experience you could ever do,” he says. “I had the best time of my life with just great people.”
Goodick plans to continue training in javelin throughout the winter. His goal in the coming season will be to beat the provincial record for senior school javelin.
