In May Dean D’Ambrose of Digby County was diagnosed with esophagus cancer.

His family and friends came together and recently organized a benefit on his behalf that in only five hours raised $20,342 to help with expenses.

“The community support blew us away. It definitely makes you proud to be a part of a community that’s willing to help out in tough times like this,” said Tracy McBride, D’Ambrose’s cousin.

Due to the treatment D’Ambrose is unable to work. The funds raised will help with everyday expenses, travel costs to and from Halifax – where he’s getting treatment – food costs because he now has to use a feeding tube to eat and for any unexpected expenses that may arise.

“It was really great to see so many people wanting to help, whether it be a dollar or two, anything at all helps,” said McBride.

The benefit was hosted at the Digby Fire Department and included raffle ticket draws, a silent auction, bake sale, entertainment, as well as family and friends sharing stories of D’Ambrose.

“When we were counting up the totals, we were just all in tears. We couldn’t believe it and we still can’t believe it.”

D’Ambrose wasn’t able to attend the benefit because he’s in Halifax getting treatment. But during the event his friends and family sent him videos, so he could join in on the fun through Facebook.

“He couldn’t believe the turnout either,” said McBride.

The family would like to thank everyone who supported the benefit in one way or another. Whether it was through a kind message, organizing, a donation or attending the benefit, they are thankful.

“The support has been overwhelming, everyone wanted to help in whatever way they could,” McBride said.

D’Ambrose is scheduled for an MRI on Aug. 30. After that, doctors should be able to confirm when they will be able to operate.

“Treatment takes a toll on your body physically but we’re all staying positive for Dean,” McBride said.
