Registration opens for the Nova Scotia PC leadership convention

- TRICOUNTY VANGUARD

Nova Scotia’s Progressive Conservatives can now register to attend the party’s leadership convention.

Registration is underway for the convention that will be held at the Halifax Exhibition Centre on Oct. 26 and 27.

“Choosing a party leader is one of the most exciting things a political party can do,” said leadership selection co-chairwoman Tara Erskine. “In our case, we won’t just be picking our party’s leader, we are choosing Nova Scotia’s next premier.”

Unlike some leadership contests of the past where each constituency elected delegates to represent them at the convention, the party chose a convention format where every member can attend the convention and cast their own ballot for leader.

“We believe the model we have chosen combined with five great candidates will make for an exciting convention,” said Chris d’Entremont, co-chairman of the leadership selection committee.

Members can register online for the leadership convention. Early bird registration is available until Oct. 1. For those who are unable to attend the convention, there is an option to vote by mail.

Five candidates will be running for the leadership at the convention being held at the Halifax Exhibition Centre.

The five candidates vying to be leader of the PC Party are:

• Julie Chaisson, executive director of the Halifax Farmers’ Market;

• Cecil Clarke, mayor of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality;

• Tim Houston, MLA for Pictou East;

• John Lohr, MLA for North; and

• Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin, MLA for Cumberland North.

For members have a vote to select our next leader, they must have an up-to-date membership by September 11.
