From a children’s carnival to a redneck car smash up event that’s sure to generate more than a few laughs, a solid schedule of events is on tap for the annual Sable River Firefighters Fun Fest.

The event will be held on Sept. 29 at the Sable River Volunteer Fire Department hall and the Sable River Community Hall.

The festivities get underway at 10 a.m. with a washer tournament, silent auction, yard sale, craft and bake tables, a show and shine and the children’s carnival. Kids are encouraged to wear costumes to the carnival and dress up their pets as well.

The redneck car smash up is a new event for the Fun Fest this year.

“We’re going to have an old car there. Take out the windows for safety and charge people so much a whack to beat it up with a sledge hammer,” said chief Todd Sisk.

A jaws of life demonstration, a crib tournament, a 50/50 draw and the chicken barbecue, which is “always a very big hit,” are among other activities taking place during Fun Fest, said organizer Theresa Brown. “It’s the biggest fundraiser we do throughout the year. This is where we get money to support training and new equipment purchases so hopefully it’s a great turnout.”

Brown said community members are welcome to come and set up a table for the yard sale but should pre-register by contacting Brown at 902-874-1693. Anyone who has donations for the silent auction can also contact Brown.

The Sable River Fire Department’s Chase the Ace tickets will also be available for purchase at Fun Fest, provided no one draws the ace by then. The department

is fattening the jackpot each week with 40 per cent of all ticket sales. The pot is “growing faster than most because we’re putting 40 per cent in and others put 30 per cent,” said Sisk.

The department’s Chase the Ace tickets can also be purchased through their Facebook page.
