Bear River L’sit’kuk Harvesters Gathering Oct. 17-21
The 2018 Bear River L’sit’kuk Harvesters Gathering will be held next month in recognition of Mi’kmaq History Month will include a PowWow and Mawiomi featuring internationally renowned Indigenous dancers.
The annual harvest gathering will take place from Oct. 17 – 21 on the Bear River First Nation grounds, beginning with the tradition of lighting the Sacred Fire, followed by spiritual blessing traditions, singing, dancing and storytelling during the five-day celebration.
“The Harvesters Gathering is an integral way our community connects with each other and Mother Earth as we give thanks over a fiveday spiritual cleansing,” says Chief Carol Potter of Bear River.
The Gathering is a traditional event that brings community members together to give thanks for the land and those that hunt, fish, and harvest throughout the year. The Gathering always includes cultural activities and a community feast including the many traditional Mi’kmaq foods such as moose, deer, salmon and lobster.
“The Gathering also presents a wonderful opportunity for us to welcome everyone from the general public to learn more about and experience the beauty of the Mi’kmaq culture,” adds Potter.
About Mi’kmaq History Month
Each October, community activ- ities, events, sharing and showcasing Mi’kmaw people, history and heritage take place across Nova Scotia in an effort to raise awareness of communities across the region. October was chosen because it coincides with the anniversary of the signing the inaugural peace and friendship treaty.
Mi’kmaq History Month is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. In 1993, Premier John Sav- age and Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy declared October as the official month to recognize and celebrate culture and heritage.
