Nova Sco­tia’s culi­nary in­dus­try cel­e­brated

Digby County com­pany among those hon­oured with Taste of Nova Sco­tia Award

A Digby County seafood com­pany is among those cel­e­brated with Taste of Nova Sco­tia Awards that rec­og­nize the vi­brant culi­nary in­dus­try in Nova Sco­tia.

This year’s win­ners, from con­sumer and in­dus­try nom­i­na­tions, were an­nounced dur­ing DE­VOUR! The Food Film Fest on Oct. 25.

Among the win­ners was Comeau’s Sea Foods Ltd. Of Saulnierville, which was rec­og­nized as Pro­ducer of the Year.

For more than 70 years, Comeau’s Sea Foods has been a main­stay in the Cana­dian seafood in­dus­try. It is seen as a leader in the har­vest­ing, pro­cess­ing, and global dis­tri­bu­tion of fish and seafood prod­ucts.

Ac­cord­ing to its web­site fresh goods in­clude scal­lops, her­ring, her­ring meal, and oil. Comeau’s Sea Foods Group also pro­cesses a full line of qual­ity frozen her­ring fil­lets, scal­lops and her­ring roe. Its val­ueadded prod­uct lines in­clude smoked sal­mon, smoked mack­erel, salt fish, breaded scal­lops, bacon-wrapped sal­mon, seafood spreads, seafood chow­ders, and ready-to-eat items.

“Food is our cul­ture and our his­tory. It shapes our land­scape and coastal com­mu­ni­ties. It tells the story of who we are and where we’re from,” said Emily Haynes, ex­ec­u­tive di­rec­tor of Taste of Nova Sco­tia. “These awards tell the story of five Taste of Nova Sco­tia mem­bers...their pas­sion, their vi­sion, their cre­ativ­ity, their tal­ent and their com­mit­ment to the Nova Sco­tia culi­nary in­dus­try.” Other re­cip­i­ents were:

• Server of the Year: Brian Unsworth, Har­bour City Bar & Grill (Hal­i­fax, NS)

• Restau­rant of the Year: D’Vine Morsels at Avon­dale Sky Winery (New­port Land­ing, NS)

• Prod­uct of the Year: Spring GiNS Com­pass Dis­tillers (Hal­i­fax, NS)

• Gary MacDon­ald Culi­nary Am­bas­sador Award: Renée Laval­lée, The Can­teen (Dart­mouth, NS)

Nom­i­na­tions for the Taste of Nova Sco­tia Awards were re­ceived from Taste of Nova Sco­tia mem­bers and the pub­lic. The nom­i­na­tions were brought to a judges’ panel and then ap­proved by the Taste of Nova Sco­tia Board of Di­rec­tors.
