So much happening, so much to enjoy

- Kristy Herron

Wow, my calendar is filling up with so many neat events, activities and shopping opportunities that have multiple benefits. This time of year offers so much ‘social interaction potential.’

I so enjoy attending the fairs, the teas and events. Not that you need an excuse to spend time with a neighbour or friend, but these engagements add a festive note. Further, they are all for worthy causes.

Crafty Claus is happening on Friday, Nov.16, 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Digby Legion. Admission is $2. This annual event is a fundraiser for the Digby General Hospital Auxiliary. As in previous years, it includes many vendors with crafts, homemade jellies, jams and pickles and a full canteen.

I am telling my travelling companions that we should start early on Nov. 24 as there is much to see and do. In Bear River there is the fourth annual Holiday Spirit Craft Show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Rebekah Hall. Then we will travel to Digby for the Trinity Anglican Merry Christmas Annual Tea from 2 to 4 p.m. Here you will have a delightful lunch and the sales tables are phenomenal.

Also the Weymouth Festival of the Trees starts on the 23rd with a Grand Gala, but is open from Nov. 24 to Nov. 30.

On Sunday the 25th, I have several friends who are going to the Fundy Chorale’s Candlelight & Starglow at St. Patrick’s Church at 4 p.m. Tickets are $12.

The following week is one of my favourites. For me this event, in reality, starts the Christmas season with a reminder of what Christmas is all about! Dec. 2nd is Christmas Daddies. Little did the founders know that this annual extravaganza would prevail for almost half a century. Back then posters, print newspapers and word of mouth spread the message. Today our modern social media venues have opened up new avenues to raise funds for this worthwhile initiative. Digby Annapolis Christmas Daddies has an online auction on Facebook that is open until 6 p.m. on the day of the show. Check out all the wonderful items when you get a chance. Make time to drop in. I know we can watch it on Eastlink, but a visit is well worth the effort. Christmas Daddies is truly an admirable cause. It may not be easy to accept the reality that there are so far too many in our small rural community that are at a loss to meet basic needs, let alone celebrate the season. It is a year-long struggle for some as our food bank will unfortunately attest to. Christmas Daddies respectfully addresses this inequity. This is not only a Christmas miracle, it is a celebration of all that is good about our rural community.

Then the following weekend there are more venues and events. The Annual Christmas Tea and Bazaar at the Westport Fire Hall takes place on Dec. 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hot lunches, including scrumptious lobster chowder, will be available. There will be a community gift swap, crafts and baked goods. The day will be complete when, at 6:30 p.m., the Memory Tree will be lit. This will provide you with an opportunity to sing and enjoy hot chocolate with your cake. The proceeds are for the fire department.

Finally, there is the Christmas Craft Show fundraiser for Digby Scallop Days, also on Dec. 8. The show is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Digby Elementary School. Although Scallop Days are a ways away, this event ensures our summer signature event has resources to grow and be the best it can be for August.

Well so much to do, so little time. Perhaps I will see many of you on my travels.
