High school hockey weekend recap
The following is a recap of Valley High School Hockey League boys action from last weekend.
West Kings 7 – Barrington 6 (Shootout win)
West Kings hosted the Barrington Barons with the Wolverines winning 7-6 in a shootout.
By early in the second period West Kings had stretched their lead to 3-0 but Barrington answered with two goals to cut the lead. West Kings responded with a goal but Barrington snapped in two quick goals to tie the game 4-4. West Kings scored two powerplay goals with less than a minute in the period to go up 6-4.
In the third period West Kings got into penalty trouble and Barrington scored two PP goals with less than two minutes left in the period to tie it up 6-6. With no scoring in overtime the game went to a shootout with West Kings taking the win.
Game scorers for Barrington were Jagger Kane and Tanner Bateman each with 2 goals and singles by Kieran O’Connor and Ryan O’Collaghan.
NKEC 5 – Par-en-Bas 2
In Canning on Friday night, the NKEC Titans defeated the PEB Sharks 5-2. For the Sharks Miguel D’Eon had a powerplay goal, assisted by Jaden Samms, at the 15-minute mark of the 1st period. The Titans responded a minute later but the Sharks’ Yanick Cottreau scoring another powerplay goal, assisted by Jaden Samms and Zachary D’Arcy. Still, NKEC answered with a goal to tie things up 2-2 after one period. NKEC would score three more goals during the game.
Clare 6 – Yarmouth 3
The ESDC Senior Boys Hockey team hosted the Yarmouth Vikings on Nov 10.
The score was 2-1 for Yarmouth after the first period and 3-2 for the Vikings after the second. Braden Trimper turned the game around for the home team at the beginning of the third period scoring 2 quick goals to give Clare its first lead at 4-3. Clare went on to win the game 6-3.
Scoring two goals for Clare were Mathieu Belliveau and Braden Trumper. Also scoring for Clare Miguel LeBlanc and Jean Luc Comeau. Assists were contributed by Nema Hanna and Miguel LeBlanc each with 2; and Jacques Saulnier, Jacob Chartier and Mitch MacLean each with 1.
Scoring for Yarmouth was Dorian Clements (Shay MacPhee, Jaden Watkins); JJ MacPhee (Nolan MacDonald, Shay MacPhee) and Shay MacPhee assisted by Nolan MacDonald.
Par-en-Bas 7 – Barrington 4
On Nov. 10 the Barons visited the PEB Sharks. The Barons scored the only goal of the first period. In the second period the Barons’ attack put them up 3-0 early on. Par-en-Bas started their comeback scoring 2 of their own late in the 2nd making it 3-2 after two periods. The Sharks scored an early powerplay goal in the 3rd to tie the game 3-3. Barrington responded with a goal to regain their lead before Yanick Cottreau scored two late in the 3rd to give Paren-Bas the lead. Brennan Smith scored an empty net goal that sealed the deal.
Scoring for the Barrons were Jude Greenwood (2), Cole Nickerson and Tanner Bateman
Scoring for Par-en-Bsa was Yanick Cottreau (2), Jadyn Samms, Zach D’Arcy, Miguel d’Eon and Brennan Smith.
Middleton 5 – Yarmouth 1
Powerplays were the difference in a game between Yarmouth and Middleton but not for the reason you would think. The Monarchs capitalized to score shorthanded goals in a 5-1 Nov. 11 victory.
Yarmouth opened the scoring in the first period with a powerplay goal by Zach Richardson, assisted by Jared Minard and Shay MacPhee, at 17:52. Middleton replied at the end of the period on a powerplay goal as well. It was 1-1 for much of the second period but within the span of under a minute Middleton scored two shorthanded goals on Yarmouth’s four-minute PP to take a 3-1 lead.
Yarmouth put the pressure on during a late powerplay in the third period but couldn’t beat Monarch goalie Jesse Porteous at the net. After a lot of scrums at the Middleton net, the Monarchs got a breakaway and scored to increase their lead to 4-1. They later added one more goal.
