Warm thoughts with winter on the way

- Kristy Herron

Yes we had our first dusting of the white stuff last Friday. A dear friend refers to that word – snow – as four-letter profanity, hence she insists I not speak of it in her presence.

Well, it would be nice if things were different, but they are not. We can pout and deny, or we can embrace the season. Don’t get me wrong I too now love my electric blanket, comfort food and staying indoors – but I know that this is not really positive from a health perspective.

The upcoming holiday season provides us all with so many opportunities to be social and interactive. I have already written about a few, but there are so many more. It takes some effort but I have been able to drag her out to a few of these events and I plan on doing this many more times – like the tree lightings in Weymouth and the Town of Digby. Sure, extra clothes, mitts and boots are a given, but the warmth of companionship is key.

In Weymouth on Saturday,

Nov. 23 at 6 p.m. you are welcome to view the tree donated by Carleen Comeau in memory of her parents Warren and Joyce Cromwell. Further you are encouraged to bring an ornament to hang on the tree in memory of someone you hold dear. That is such a delightful aspect of this event. As always in Weymouth there will be light refreshments.

The following week will be the annual Town of Digby Tree Lighting Ceremony on Nov. 29 at 6:00 p.m. This event is held the last Friday in November behind the Cenotaph on the Promenade.

However before the tree lightings, in the Town of Digby the DGH Annual Auxiliary’s Crafty Claus Fair will be held at the

Digby Legion. This year the Crafty Claus, is being held, Friday, Nov. 15 from 3-8 p.m., and Saturday,

Nov.16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will also be rapure pie, pizza, sandwiches and soup for sale. Organizer Jacqueline Dugas urges you to come to enjoy the sold-out tables and take a look at the new vendors.

And now that you are out and about, check out the recreation offerings by both the Fundy YMCA and Digby Area Recreation. SMBA, ICS and DRH all have open gym nights. There are Zumba Gold, public skates, including sensory friendly skates on the 12th and the 24th. At the Fundy Y enjoy aquatic programs, yoga, walking programs and so much more. The YMCA is on the bus route.

If group stuff is not your style, call a friend for a brisk winter walk, or enjoy a cup of tea or a movie night at your place or theirs. Seasonal favorites are on our channels and some networks are airing new soon to be Christmas delights.

It is so easy to avoid the inclement weather and become preoccupied with the early setting of the sun, but to be alive we are social beings. We need each other to be whole and healthy.

I suspect that over the next few months we will have power outages, challenges and cold. However, if we make the effort to collect folks for events, to keep physically active and look forward to the coming spring.
