New wharf being built in Upper Port LaTour
The construction of a new wharf at Seal Point in Upper Port LaTour, Shelburne County, is well underway.
The $6.8 million project includes the construction of a new crib wharf to the west of the currently load restricted wooden wharf, demolition of the old wharf, as well as dredging and the installation of an updated electrical system. The project is slated for completion by Jan. 31, 2020.
The project is one of 10 Small Craft Harbour projects announced last year for the region. The status of the other projects are varied.
In Gunning Cove, the construction of a $2 million floating wharf and electrical upgrades have been completed.
In Bear Point work is still ongoing on a $2.3 million structure reconstruction that will raise the concrete deck elevation at the wharf.
The tenders have closed but not yet awarded for the construction of a new wharf at the Dennis Point wharf in Middle West Pubnico.
In Port L'Hebert Harbour, a $7.5 million tender has been awarded for the construction of north and south breakwater wharfs. The north breakwater wharf will be of composite (armoustone and cribwork) construction, the south breakwater wharf will be of steel H-pile construction with reinforced concrete pile caps and deck. All elements of the work must be completed on or before March 31, 2021.
Other projects announced last year included the construction of containment cells to allow for the disposal of dredged materials at wharves in both Chegoggin and Pinkey’s Point; the installation of a float system at the Meteghan wharf, and repair work at the Wedgeport and Hampton wharves.
