Some upcoming holiday happenings in Digby

- Kristy Herron

As the holidays grow closer, many of us become reflective. Some of the thoughts are bittersweet, while others make us laugh.

At Crafty Claus I purchased a jar of Lady Ashburnham Pickles. Growing up I remember this condiment was always part of every meal. Yet, I have not made them since my father passed. I am not sure why, as the recipe is easy and the results are delicious.

The taste brought back memories of a crowded table, conversations and warm feelings. But there was also some sadness – missing the folks who used to share those meals.

It is easy to get caught up in the way things once were and become overwhelmed, however, there are ways to move forward in a positive manner. There are so many activities and events in our communities. Most are at no cost and you get an opportunity to share your time with others, build new traditions and enjoy the fellowship of the season.

One of the most uplifting traditions I have come to make part of my celebrations is the Journey to Bethlehem. On Dec. 1 the procession starts with a carol sing at the Wesleyan Church at 6:30 p.m. From there you proceed to the Rivers of Grace, then St Patrick’s, then the Baptist Church ending at Trinity Anglican at 9 p.m. At each stop there are mini services, readings, songs and, of course, refreshments.

Earlier on Dec. 1 the Digby Legion is alive with Christmas Daddies. You can watch it on Eastlink, but you do miss something if you do not make the effort to attend in person. You can also preview all the 50-plus silent auction items on the Facebook site. There is also a canteen on site with yummy treats. Christmas Daddies is a special event in which we demonstrate all that is good about our rural community. With Christmas Daddies the folks who would not have a jolly Christmas are given a hand.

The following week, on Friday, Dec. 6, and Saturday, Dec. 7, this year's Digby & Area Theatre Societies Christmas Play is "If it's Monday, This must be Christmas" will be performed at the Digby Regional High School Community Theatre. I understand it is a comedy set in the 1950s with wisecracks and plot twists flying faster than Santa's sleigh in this yuletide whodunit. Tickets are $12 in advance for adults ($14 at the door), $8 for children under 12 years. Advance tickets are being sold at busy Bees Hair Salon, Weymouth Mercantile, Digby Convenience and Cornwallis Value Foods.

The holidays can be a difficult time for many, but you can reach out and spend time with others.

Better still, if you know someone is struggling you can make the move to include them as well.
