Yarmouth County athletic awards to be presented Nov. 29
Ceremony to take place at École secondaire de Par-en-Bas
An annual tradition that began more than four decades ago continues in 2019, as Yarmouth County gets ready to present its athletic awards for another year.
The ceremony is scheduled for Friday evening, Nov. 29, at École secondaire de Par-en-Bas in Tusket.
Individuals and teams representing a wide variety of sports will be recognized for their achievements from the past year.
The evening also will feature the presentation of special awards, including male and female honours for athlete of the year, youth athlete of the year, coach of the year and sport volunteer of the year.
Fair play awards (one male,
one female) also will be presented, along with an award for official of the year.
The scope of the special awards goes beyond what people have done during the past year. These awards recognize individuals for their accomplishments in sports or for their contribution to the sports community over the years.
The following are the people chosen to receive special awards this year:
• Jeff Gates, male coach of the year. (He has coached hockey, baseball and softball.)
• Leah Muise, female coach of the year (baseball, soccer).
• Calvin Smith, official of the year (basketball).
• Matt Baron, male athlete of the year (hockey).
• Lindsey Minard, female athlete of the year (hockey).
• Blake Newell, male youth athlete of the year (baseball, hockey).
• Megan d’Entremont, female youth athlete of the year (volleyball).
• Marcel Doucette, male fair play award (hockey).
• Andrea Doucette, female fair play (volleyball).
• Adam Churchill, male sport volunteer award (hockey).
• Tina Comeau, female sport volunteer award (hockey).
The Yarmouth County athletic awards ceremony, which originated 43 years ago, is a joint initiative of Yarmouth Recreation and the Municipality of Argyle’s recreation department.
Frank Grant, of Yarmouth Recreation, and Ginette d’Entremont, of the Argyle recreation department, both of whom have been involved in organizing the awards ceremony for many years, say they are proud of the accomplishments of local athletes and teams, noting Yarmouth County has been well represented at the provincial, Atlantic and national levels.
In a comment issued jointly, they also spoke about the positive impact sport can have on a community.
“Sport is something that binds us all together and helps bring a strong sense of camaraderie and unity. We would like to congratulate all of the teams and individuals that have competed at the provincial level or higher throughout the year. This is an important event that we must continue with for many years to come. Also, a very special thank you to those people who have submitted nominations and sport information to us telling us of all the wonderful things that our athletes, coaches, volunteers, officials and teams are doing.”
