Yarmouth businesswoman 2020 Atlantic Canadian hairstylist of the year
Models’ hair colour inspired by colour palettes of stylist’s late mother’s paintings
Heidi Kenney has received Salon Magazine Contessa’s award Atlantic Canadian hairstylist of the year.
For this year’s Atlantic Canadian award, there were four others in her category: two from Newfoundland and Labrador, one from Prince Edward Island and one other from Nova Scotia.
In a follow-up interview with Salon Magazine, Kenney said colour placement, cuts and inspiration helped her to clinch the win.
In 2010, Kenney was one of four winners in the Matrix Destination Fame competition, an opento-all-hairdressers event. There were about 300 entries from across Canada.
She and her model, Brittany Atkinson, were flown to Toronto for the professional Matrix calendar photo shoot and one shot was chosen as the cover for the Matrix calendar, as well as the October issue of Canadian Hairdresser.
Heidi Kenney Hair Studio and Spa received the 2019 award for artisan business of the year from the Yarmouth and Area Chamber of Commerce.
This year, each model’s hair colour was inspired by the colour palettes of Kenney’s late mother’s (Carlene MacDonald) paintings.
The models – Jillian Doucet, Stephanie Murphy and Kay Muise – are all from the Yarmouth area. Photos were shot in Kenney’s salon on Lakeside Road in Dayton, with the assistance of her salon team, photographer Denis Duquette and editorial makeup artist Heidi Fleming.
“These models are clientele of the salon,” said Kenney.
“I love to use the local beauty and am always looking for potential models.”
Kenney will be off to Montreal for another photo shoot in January.
“As always, myself and my salon team will be attending lots of national and international education events in 2020,” she said.
