With another holiday season at hand, it’s just about time for one of southwestern Nova Scotia’s most popular running events: Yarmouth’s Boxing Day 5K, or Turkey Run, which is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 26.

This will be the race’s 11th edition and the start time, as usual, is 10 a.m.

Participants leave Tim Hortons/Wendy’s and head south along Main Street, going as far as Brown Street, where they take a right and go down the hill to Water Street. Turning right onto Water Street, they head north to Richards Lane, where it’s another right turn and up to Main.

They then repeat the loop, with the finish on Water Street in the West Nova Fuels parking lot.

One-hundred-fifty-eight people took part in last year’s event, which represented a return to a more typical turnout for the Turkey Run.

The participation level had dipped the previous year – 2017 – when the event was held on a bitterly cold and blustery day. Last year’s conditions – sunny, chilly – were more comfortable and numbers came back up.

Pre-registration for the race can be done at Runner’s Attic on Main Street in Yarmouth until noon on Dec. 24. Participants can also register on the day of the race between 9 and 9:45 a.m.

The entry fee is $25 for adults, $15 for students and there is a family rate of $80.

The fee covers race support, water, draw prizes and a hot breakfast. The first 100 to register get a running shirt and mug.

A post-race reception is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Yarmouth Knights of Columbus hall – corner of Collins and Second streets – where event volunteers and registered runners and walkers can get breakfast.

Proceeds from Yarmouth’s annual Boxing Day 5K support the Megan Corkum Athletic Fund, which helps athletes who have to travel to compete.
