Changes coming to Town of Yarmouth transit fares

Move toward manual ticketing will see new ticket and pass options with reduced downtime, town says

-

The Town of Yarmouth is phasing out its automated fare collection system that has been in use on transit buses since 2016.

The system, which often caused delays with intermittent and unreliable service, is being replaced by a manual ticketing process to eliminate downtime, the town has announced.

“The new and simplified ticketing system is being adopted based on successful use by other towns with transit services similar to Yarmouth’s,” the town said in a media release. “The manual system will see the transit rider simply use a one-fare ticket, exact cash or identify a monthly pass to the driver when using the bus.”

With the introduction of the new system, some fares and passes are being removed/ replaced.

Starting Monday, Feb. 24, the town will stop selling the following fares and passes:

• Daily unlimited ticket, $3 per ticket;

• Seven-day unlimited ticket, $15 per ticket;

• 365-day unlimited pass, $500 per pass.

If you have daily unlimited tickets, seven-day unlimited tickets or 365-day passes, they can be used on the bus and still purchased at local retailers until there is no more availability.

Starting Feb. 24, the following fares and passes will become available:

• One-fare ticket, $1.50 per ticket;

• Monthly pass, $50 per pass;

• Cash fare $2 exact change per ride.

Children under two years of age ride the bus for free. All prices include HST.
