Talk on pelagic birding to be held in Yarmouth Feb. 25

Presentation by Alix d’Entremont scheduled for 7 p.m. at Yarmouth County Museum

-

Alix d’Entremont, a native of West Pubnico, will be the speaker at the next meeting of the southwest chapter of the Nova Scotia Bird Society on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Yarmouth County Museum.

He will speak on the challenges of pelagic birding. Pelagic birds are species that spend most of their time on the ocean, far away from land. This group includes species like storm-petrels, shearwaters, skuas and jaegers.

They can sometimes be observed from shore, especially when weather conditions push them towards the coast, but most often birders must go to the birds by boat.

D’Entremont will focus his talk on two trips south of the Scotian Shelf break in 2017 and 2019. He will show many photos and videos taken during these two trips.

He will also discuss some changes in the species occurring off our coasts in recent years.

D’Entremont works for the municipalities of Yarmouth and Argyle as a mapping technician, having studied geomantic engineering at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.

He is the editor of Nova Scotia Birds, the Nova Scotia Bird Society's quarterly magazine, and is a member of the society's board of directors.

He is a member of the roseate tern recovery team and has been surveying islands for terns since 2016. He has worked on colonial seabird surveys for Environment Canada and Université Sainte-Anne.

The Nova Scotia Bird Society welcomes everyone to their meetings, and admission is free.
