The number of walkers was up only slightly, but the amount of money raised was up significantly for the Coldest Night of the Year event in Yarmouth.

The walk, held on Feb. 22, raised more than $19,000, compared to $13,000 raised in 2019. The final figure could still grow as the donation period extends into March.

This was the second year for the Yarmouth walk, part of a nationwide series of events held the same day.

The walks raise funds for organizations that help hungry, homeless and hurting people. Proceeds from the Yarmouth event go to SHYFT Youth Services and the Tri-County Women’s Centre.

Adam Dolliver, an organizer of the walk and executive director of SHYFT Youth

Services, was thrilled with the amount that was raised.

“Once again, I am astonished by the generosity and support that our community continues to demonstrate for SHYFT and Tri-County Women’s Centre,” he said.

He made a point of expressing appreciation to everyone involved in the Yarmouth walk, whether they were participants or helped out in some capacity.

“I send out my most heartfelt thanks to all the sponsors and donors who supported the cause,” he said, “and to all the volunteers who worked so hard to make the night such a success.”

Trish McCourt, executive director of the Tri-County Women’s Centre, shared Dolliver’s assessment of the walk and tipped her cap to everyone involved, including students from Burridge.

Dolliver says he believes more growth is in store for the Yarmouth event as organizers look ahead to next year and beyond.
