TRIATHLETE OF THE Year? Next time you can pick ’em. Our annual awards don’t seem to be getting any easier to figure out these days. Get this: Brent Mcmahon did two Ironman races under 7:51, missed the (then) world best time by 12 seconds, and didn’t even get the nod for long- distance triathlete of the year. We even asked for people to help us pick the international women’s triathlete of the year – the woman who broke the Kona course record by almost six minutes and also recorded the third-fastest full- distance time in history didn’t even get a quarter of the votes. In the end, though, these are all good problems to have. As we’re getting used to here in Canada, we had numerous age group world championship medallists and a pro contingent who are among the best in the world wherever they race. Triathlon Canada’s Excellence Awards are givent to athletes who win a medal at a championship event and who are in the top half of their field.
