VCI Rebels soccer in development mode
Coach Sarah Dagg gives a pre-season pep talk to prospective members of this year’s VCI Rebels varsity soccer squad, prior to their first tryouts session. It is going to be a learning session this season for many of the players on this year’s VCI Rebels girls’ soccer squad.
“We’ll definitely have a soccer team,” said Coach Sarah Dagg, following last Friday afternoon’s initial tryouts session.
The Sept. 9 practice/evaluation saw more than a dozen would-be players turn out on the soccer field, at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI), to try for a seat on the bench when the regular season begins at the end of the month.
The question for Dagg is whether or not
she will have both a junior and a senior team to coach this season or a combined varsity squad. Last year’s excellent performance season for the VCI Rebels finished with a big cut to the team’s ranks and not because of injuries.
“It’ll be a development year this year,” said Dagg. “We lost half of our (senior) team to graduation.”
But the veteran high-school coach expressed optimism about the potential crop of new recruits joining the returning halfdozen-or-more veterans from last year for the 2016-2017 season.
“Very enthusiastic,” she said, “and excited to get the season going.”
