Season opener showcases Junior C skills on ice

The scoring ranged from very high to very low depending on whose side of the scoreboard the final number tallies appeared. Saturday afternoon saw both rinks occupied at the Clarence-Rockland Arena as the National Capital Junior Hockey League held its Showcase opener tournament to launch the 2016-2017 junior C season.

Host club the Rockland Nationals took to the ice at five o’clock for the final game of the day, facing the Gatineau-Hull Volant. The visiting team pounded the Nats 8-1 with Patrick Lemay scoring the sole point for Rockland with assists from Vincent Martel and Raphael Payant.

Simon Picard and Charles St-Denis each notched two goals for Gatineau with Volant singles going into the net from Martin Arnold, Alex Ethier, Denis Gratton, and Karl Venne. Assisting on the Volant goal-scoring were Arnold, Louis-Philippe Cyr, Alexis Gauthier, Marc-Olivier Lafrenière, Francis Nadon, Nolan Peck, and Maxime Racette.

The Vankleek Hill Cougars enjoyed shredding the Morrisburg Lions 5-3, with Charles Doyon and Maxime Émond each punching two goals each for Vankleek Hill. Cougars Vincet Huneault accounted for the remaining point. Goals assists came from Émond and Huneault and from Tyler Dopelhamer and Marc-Antoine Doyon.

Scoring for Morrisburg were Patrick Landy with two goals and a single from Justin Laundrie. Goal assists came from Jeremy DaPonte, Brett Ellis, and Josh Primeau.

The Embrun Panthers plucked the StIsidore Aigles 4-1 with single goals from Nathan Bols, Philippe Brunet, Hayden Loiselle, and Justin Raymond. Assisting on the goal-scoring were Bols, Loiselle, Raymond, Daniel Cogan, Michael Cogan, and Sébastien Roy. The lone Aigles goal came from Pascal Larocque with an assist from Mandel Jean-Louis.

The North Dundas Rockets stole the game 6-4 from the Cumberland Bandits with a pair of goals each from Trevor Petawabano and Bryden van Kessel. The two remaining points were courtesy of Shawn Simms and Joshua Trapper. Assisting on the goals were Petawabano, van Kessel, and Jarred Benac.

Bandits Patrick Sevigny punched in two points for Cumberland with Gabriel Cuillerier and Karl Diotte finishing the tally. Goals assists came from Joshua Bourdeau, Aiden Cannell, Alexis Diotte, and Samuel Gaudet.

Rockland had a better Sunday at home against the Papineauvi­lle Vikings. The Nats won 4-2 with a pair of goals from Jeff Brett and singles by Nickolas Spirito and Anthony Tulipano. Goal assists came from Paul Armstrong, Benoit Brunet, Frederik Champagne, and Raphael Payant.

Scoring for Papineauvi­lle were Mathieu Des Ruisseaux and Jérémie Trudeau, all The North Dundas Rockets (red) outshot the Cumberland Bandits 6-4 in their Saturday Showcase match.

The Cougars visited the Aigles Sunday in St-Isidore and went home to Vankleek Hill with a 3-1 win. Scoring for the Cougars were Ryan Allen, Marc-Antoine Doyon,

and Antoine Messier, with goal assists from Nikolas Ayotte, Nicolas Castonguay, and Charles Doyon. Nicholas Souligny scored the lone Aigles goal with help from Jacob Bélanger and Dominik Henrie.
