A road game in Gatineau, last Friday, proved a hard match for the Vankleek Hill Cougars.

The Gatineau Hull-Volant took down the Cougars 5-2 at the end of the game. Cougars’ Coach Franky Dopelhamer remarked, in a post-game email, that it was “a tough loss” for Vankleek Hill against the leading team in the National Capital Junior Hockey League (NCJHL), but the players made the most of their scoring chances. They just had back puck luck on the net.

“It was a good game, they (Cougars) had their chances, and goalie Fred Durocher was solid in the net,” stated Dopelhamer. “The Cougars made good use of their affiliated players, Cédric Gagnon and Brenden Easterbrook in the lineup, and they were happy to have their captain, Keean McEachern, come back from his injury.”

Dopelhamer observed that the Cougars still lacked six of their regular players during the play, including the team’s top two goalscorers, Nicolas Castonguay and Samuel Lemay.

“So, all in all, they had a young lineup, and it was a good experience for the younger players,” stated Dopelhamer. “It showed them that they need to put in that extra work to compete against the league’s top teams.”

Gatineau led the scoring 2-1 after the first period and 4-2 at the end of the second, marking their final goal on an empty net in third, to finish the score at 5-2. Shooting in goals for Vankleek Hill were Justin Chaumont and Nikolas Ayotte. Assisting on the goals were Jonathan Lacroix and Trystan Lavoie, with Durocher-Bourdon in the net.

Gatineau goals included two from Robert Mochi and singles by Jérémy Cardinal, Dave Fréchette, and Hugo Lusignan. Assisting were Cardinal, Yoan Charron, Zachary Page, Danny Plourde-Grenon, and Jérémy Trudeau. Marc-Olivier Bastien guarded the net.
