Around the world with coffee

Celebration of friendship and coffee taking place Thursday

- By lynn curwin

People are invited to a celebration of friendship and coffee Thursday evening.

A gathering is being held at the Dal AC MacRae Library, at 7 p.m., to welcome students and share coffee from around the world. Students and others wearing traditional dress from their home countries of Jamaica, Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia will serve coffee to visitors at the free event.

“We want to have a community welcoming celebration for all students new to the area,” said Jennifer Tilley, one of the organizers.

“It’s a chance to let them know there’s a larger community

that would like to know them.”

It was decided to have coffee as the theme because Sept. 29 is World Coffee Day. Students will share information about coffee in other countries, including some surprises about how it is consumed.

Most activities will take place indoors but coffee roasting will take place over an outdoor fire.

This is a family event and children’s activities will be included.

The film “Black Gold” will also be shown.

The friendship/coffee celebration is an initiative of the Living Earth Council, Dalhousie University, Just Us! Coffee Roasters Co-op, Societal Conscious Paradigm Shifters and Seeding Ideas.

Everyone is welcome.
