Saying goodbye

Carsand-Mosher saying goodbye with smiles and fond memories

- By lynn Curwin

Lee Yorke has made many friends during his time at Carsand-Mosher. Next month, the downtown Truro business will close its doors.

Lee Yorke will miss not only the work, but also the opportunity to see many of the friends he’s made over the years, when Carsand-Mosher closes at the end of February.

Yorke, manager and part owner of Carsand-Mosher Photographic, said business had been declining over the last few years and the final decision on closing was made Jan. 11. The information was posted on Facebook the next day.

“There’s just not enough business,” he said. “We have a loyal group of customers, just not enough.”

As the use of social media for sharing photos increased the number of photos being printed decreased, and sales were often lost to online businesses.

“It’s just the way the world is,” said Yorke. “We appreciate the support we’ve had. This is a great community and we got to know a lot of customers as friends.”

Last Friday and Saturday, the store was extremely busy, with people from across Nova Scotia, as well as some from New Brunswick, lined up to the door to get what they wanted while it was still available. No new inventory will be arriving, so once things are gone, they’re gone.

Printing, framing and photo restoration services are still being done, and the shelves still contain cameras and other photography-related items, as well as scrapbooking supplies.

“We’re still old school and we pay attention to quality,” said Yorke. “Some places are production oriented and try to get things through as fast as possible.”

He worries that, with fewer photos being printed, a part of history could be lost.

Carsand-Mosher has eight owners, who are all family, and 15 employees. Many of them, including Yorke, will soon be looking for other work.

Yorke said the importance of supporting local, in all areas, is important to ensure more businesses aren’t lost.

Carsand-Mosher was created in 1970 and moved from Prince Street to the Esplanade in 1973.

He invites everyone to drop by the store during its last few weeks to say hello.
