Food pantry shelves receive significant boost from Sobeys
Nearly $ 13,000 was raised locally during the recent seventh annual Fill the Food Bank campaign through Sobeys stores.
The “generosity of employees, customers and vendors” resulted in a total of $ 12,856.24 being generated in the Truro area in support of the local food bank and other charities, a company spokesperson said.
Sobeys, Foodland and participating Co- op stores in the Truro and surrounding areas were involved in the campaign.
“Fill the Food Bank is one of our store’s favourite campaigns because it allows us to work with the community and help out here at home,” said Andrew St. Coeur, store manager at the Fundy Trail Mall Sobeys in Lower Truro.
“We are very grateful to be part of this community and my team takes great pride in how our customers and the company continuously come together for those in need.”
The Fundy Trail Mall store was the top fundraising store in the Truro area this year, with a total of $ 4,684.31 in food and funds collected to help feed those in need.
Across Atlantic Canada, the three- week campaign generated a total $ 420,476.94.
That brought the seven- year total to more than $ 4.5 million in proceeds to area food banks and related charities.
Sobeys also diverts more than 549,000 pounds of food and consumer products to regional food banks throughout Atlantic Canada.
“Hunger is an issue facing too many Atlantic Canadians, which is why Fill the Food Bank is such an important campaign for us,” said Peter Doucette, general manager of Sobeys Atlantic.
