Ashley MacIsaac loves performing in churches, and he’ll be in Truro this spring for a fundraising show at First United Church. The 41- year- old musician will be in town May 27.

“There’s a specific reverence when you go in churches and there’s usually beautiful sound,” he said from his home in Windsor, Ont. “I haven’t played at First United before. The community has put effort and time into making it a special place so it’s a good feeling to take part in something to help.”

He said he adjusts the type of show he’s doing for the crowd and a church won’t be the place to hear a “heavy metal” version of fiddle music.

“It’ll be a very traditional show, like you’d hear in a theatre. We want people to go home feeling like they got their money’s worth. It’ll be a night of good fiddle music with great friends for a great cause.”

MacIsaac chose to reside in Windsor for both its proximity to major centres and its climate. He first played there on a Valentine’s Day when he was a teenager. After seeing tulips in the city and being faced with high snow banks when he returned to Cape Breton he decided he would live there some day, and seven years ago he made the move.

“I get back to Cape Breton five or six times a year to see family, and I might move back when I’m older, but it makes sense to be here now,” he said.

His latest album, ‘ FDLER,’ with Jay Andrews, was released last fall and he has shows booked for Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and New Brunswick this spring. When he’s not playing music he enjoys checking out things on social media, cooking, growing plants and spending time with his three shih tzus, four parrots and two cockatiels.

“I’ll continue to watch the world and try to be happy so the next time I go out to work I’ll do my best,” he added.
