Truro women competing at world championship in Ontario this weekend
Representing Canada is a dream come true for deanna Hatfield.
Hatfield, and her friend Andrea Ashton, will be competing in the Obstacle Course Racing World Championships (OCRWC), beginning today in blue Mountain, Ont.
“It’s our first year for this and I expect it to be challenging but really exciting,” Hatfield said of the event, which includes competitors from 67 countries.
Hatfield and Ashton qualified for the event by finishing in the top 10 in their age groups (30-34 for Hatfield and 40-44 for Ashton) at Mud Hero Halifax 2017. Hatfield said she was nervous about where she’d place but felt she was ready. She was third in her category.
“I’ve taken part in Mud Hero for the past five years but this is something new,” said Hatfield. “We’ve both been training at the RECC, running in Victoria Park and playing sports to get ready for this.
“I like the challenge and I’m happy that it keeps me in shape. I find the obstacle course races exhilarating. My favourite obstacles are climbing ones with cargo nets, and swinging on rope, but they’re all really fun. There’s nothing I dislike, and when you’re done you feel you’ve accomplished something.”
Hatfield and Ashton met during a Mud Hero event, and later played ball hockey together. The women will be competing in the 3K short course race today and the 15K main event on Sunday.
