CEC girls win West Kings tournament

Record goes to eight victories in nine outings

The CEC girls volleyball team stacked up their eighth tournament of the year as they finished on top at the West Kings Remembranc­e Day Tournament this past weekend.

The Cougars defeated the West Kings Wolverines 25-20, 25-12 in the finals. The Team 1 Cougars went through the 10-team event without dropping a set. They finished first in their pool with straight set wins over Sir John A, Horton, Millwood, and Dartmouth. They defeated Ecole Secondaire de Clare 25-16, 25-8 in the semifinals.

The Team 2 Girls struggled in round-robin play, losing all four of their matches. They had straight set losses to West Kings, Clare, and Northumber­land and split sets with Middleton.

This is the last Invitation­al Tournament of the season as both teams will begin their NSSAF playoffs this coming weekend.

The Team 1 Cougars finished first in eight out of the nine tournament­s they entered this season.

Leading the Team 1 attack this weekend was Robbi Gordon with 21 kills and only two hitting errors for a 61.3 % attack percentage. Shayla Gloade and Nicole Rector each had 26 kills while Maddie MacGregor had 20.

Maddie Greatorex led the team in serving with 15 aces and only one serving error for a 3.67 serving average. Robbi Gordon had 14 aces for a 3.34 serving average. Mariah Putnam had 11 aces, 44 successful serves, and no serving errors for a 3.16 serving average.

Rebecca Worden and Mariah Putnam, the two Cougar setters, ran a smart, well balanced attack sharing the ball with all the Cougar hitters.

Leading the attack for the Team 2 Cougars was Emma Fortunato with 18 kills and only one hitting error to lead the team in attack percentage with 47.2 %. Maddy Ball had 15 kills and Emma Shive added 13. Sydney Davidson led the team in serving with 10 aces, three serving errors, and 20 successful serves for a 3.39 serving average. Emma Fortunato had 27 successful serves for a 3.11 serving average while Caitlin Whooten had 3 aces and no serving errors for a 3.42 serving average.

This coming weekend, both CEC girls’ teams will be hosting the NSSAF Northumber­land Regional Championsh­ips. Matches will be played at the Vocational School Gymnasium located in the Chignecto Central Regional School Board Building.

The Team 2 Cougars will be playing their Regional on Friday with matches scheduled for 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 6 p.m.

The Team 1 Cougars will play their Regional on Saturday with matches at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 3:15 p.m.
