Luke Macmillan of the Truro Bearcats is the recipient of the Bob Boucher Hockey Assistance Fund Scholarship for the 2017-18 season.

The scholarship is named after the late coach and executive who, prior to his death in 2004, worked at levels ranging from Nova Scotia intermediate to the NHL.

The fund was established six years ago by a number of Boucher’s former players as a means to support students within the game who have displayed exceptional scholastic achievements. This is the fourth year in which Maritime Junior Hockey League players have had the opportunity to qualify for the award.

Macmillan, of Shortts Lake, completed his second season with the Bearcats in 2017-18, registering 11 points in 49 games. He also added a goal in seven post-season games. The 19-yearold won a MHL playoff championship with the Bearcats as a rookie in 2017.

Macmillan is a winner in the classroom as well, maintaining a 4.22 grade point average and Dean’s List honours during his fall course load at Dalhousie University as he continues to work toward earning a degree in engineering.

In high school, at South Colchester Academy, Macmillan recorded a final grade of at least 92 per cent in 21 of 22 courses taken.

He is also active in the com- munity, and has spent several years giving his time to such endeavours as the CC Riders soccer program, his local Canskate “learn to skate” program and the 4-H movement.

“The Truro Bearcats organization is very proud of Luke receiving the Bob Boucher Assistance Fund Scholarship,” said Bearcats coach and general manager Shawn Evans.

“Luke is an outstanding student and represents our team, the MHL and the Truro community in a positive manner. He is already a (playoff) champion and is an excellent role model for all student-athletes who aspire to play high-level hockey while continuing their studies.”

Macmillan will be presented with a $1,500 scholarship cheque at a Bearcats home game this coming season.
