baby steps.”

Delaney recalled becoming interested in running in 1983 when encouraged by Brian Mcnutt, a runner and co-worker. Delaney trained for about eight months.

“I ran my first competitive race, the Johnny Miles, in 1984, a half marathon.

In those days the runners went through New Glasgow, down to Trenton, out to Westville and all the way back to New Glasgow.”

Incidentally, Delaney ran that half marathon in one hour, 39 minutes and 57 seconds. On June 21, 2009, almost exactly 25 years later, he ran the same half marathon in one hour, 40 minutes and 28 seconds. There was less than one minute difference in his times.

There are no medals or photos in sight at Delaney’s home. After some prompting, the modest runner went to another room, then returned with two small boxes. Enclosed were medals and newspaper write-ups. So many highlights – running the Johnny Miles, a full marathon in Pictou County in three hours and 23 minutes. He ran on P.E.I. soil several times, he ran a full marathon in Dieppe, N.B., in 2007 with a time of three hours and 25 minutes, in the pouring rain.

A former goaltender in hockey, Delaney has been employed by the Polymer Group, Truro for 35 years. Tim and his wife Gwen have one daughter, Diandra, living in Fort Mcmurray, Alberta.
