Councillor proposes 50-fold increase in

- BY DAVID MAHER

Ward 1 Coun. Deanne Stapleton is sick and tired of seeing piles of litter strewn about St. John’s, and she’s taking a stand.

During a recent St. John’s city council meeting, Stapleton proposed an increased fine for largescale littering in the city, from $100 to $5,000.

“One hundred dollars don’t deter people from littering,” said Stapleton, holding a photo of a pile of garbage behind a building near Stavanger Drive.
