Sub­way Se­lects take a pair from Pan­thers

The North­ern AAA Sub­way Se­lects con­tinue to roll with two more wins this week­end, this time over the Chevy Pan­thers of Cape Bre­ton.

Satur­day, The Se­lects played host to the Chevys who were de­feated by the Se­lects last week­end in the semi- nal of the Sub­way Cup. The Sub­ways knew they would get a strong push from the Pan­thers, look­ing to avenge the loss.

North­ern opened the scor­ing in the rst pe­riod on a goal by Lind­sey Smith.

e Se­lects took a 2-0 lead in the sec­ond as Eva Wor­nell con­verted a re­bound. e Pan­thers closed the gap to 2- 1 be­fore Wor­nell scored her sec­ond on a beau­ti­ful feed from be­hind the net into the slot.

The Pan­thers would get one more but that was as close as they would come, as Erin Sul­li­van shut the door in goal for the 3-2 win.

e Se­lects trav­elled to Cape Bre­ton Sun­day and came away with a con­vinc­ing 4-1 win on the road. Wor­nell, Na­talie Mackay, Mariah Line­han and Lan­dyn Pitts, with an empty- net­ter, scored for the Sub­ways. Kristen Macneil was strong in goal in the vic­tory.

e Se­lects host a two-game series next week­end against the Fundy Na­tion­als from Saint John, N.B.

On Satur­day the Se­lects will host a spe­cial cel­e­bra­tion evening where they will rec­og­nize last year’s Pro­vin­cial and At­lantic Cham­pion North­ern Se­lects, as well as the Founders, Builders and Vi­sion­ar­ies of the Sub­way Se­lect fe­male hockey pro­gram. e Sub­way pro­gram pro­vided the foun­da­tion for the North­ern Se­lects to de­velop over the years, cul­mi­nat­ing in an ap­pear­ance at last year’s Esso Cup Na­tional Cham­pi­onships.

ere will be give­aways, a fe­male novice game be­tween pe­ri­ods and a visit from the Sub­way Mon­key. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. on Satur­day at the Pic­tou County Well­ness Cen­tre.
