Subway Selects take a pair from Panthers

The Northern AAA Subway Selects continue to roll with two more wins this weekend, this time over the Chevy Panthers of Cape Breton.

Saturday, The Selects played host to the Chevys who were defeated by the Selects last weekend in the semi- nal of the Subway Cup. The Subways knew they would get a strong push from the Panthers, looking to avenge the loss.

Northern opened the scoring in the rst period on a goal by Lindsey Smith.

e Selects took a 2-0 lead in the second as Eva Wornell converted a rebound. e Panthers closed the gap to 2- 1 before Wornell scored her second on a beautiful feed from behind the net into the slot.

The Panthers would get one more but that was as close as they would come, as Erin Sullivan shut the door in goal for the 3-2 win.

e Selects travelled to Cape Breton Sunday and came away with a convincing 4-1 win on the road. Wornell, Natalie Mackay, Mariah Linehan and Landyn Pitts, with an empty- netter, scored for the Subways. Kristen Macneil was strong in goal in the victory.

e Selects host a two-game series next weekend against the Fundy Nationals from Saint John, N.B.

On Saturday the Selects will host a special celebratio­n evening where they will recognize last year’s Provincial and Atlantic Champion Northern Selects, as well as the Founders, Builders and Visionarie­s of the Subway Select female hockey program. e Subway program provided the foundation for the Northern Selects to develop over the years, culminatin­g in an appearance at last year’s Esso Cup National Championsh­ips.

ere will be giveaways, a female novice game between periods and a visit from the Subway Monkey. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
