Soul’s Harbour still providing meals to those in need

- TRURO NEWS

TRURO, N.S. – Despite COVID-19, Soul’s Harbour Rescue Mission continues to help feed some of the most vulnerable people in Nova Scotia.

“Our numbers have increased because of other things having to close, said Soul’s Harbour Rescue Mission Nova Scotia CEO Michelle Porter. “Sit-down meals can no longer be served, so lunches are being handed out at the door. There’s a lack of interaction but everyone is very grateful for the food.”

The organization is now serving 300 meals a day between its Halifax, Bridgewater, and Truro locations. In the past, 60 people would be an unusually large crowd at the Truro site, but last week there were more than 60 each day. The cost of meals has increased, from about $3.11 per person to $4.85 per person, because more prepackaged items are needed for takeout, and with Mission Mart, their secondhand store closed income has decreased.

“The community has been really good so far to provide food, but any donations are really helpful at this time,” said Porter.

To make a special financial gift, people can call 902-405-4663 and designate their donation for CARE. Donations can be made online at bit.ly/soulsharbour with CARE in the memo line.
