Lions roar to indoor title
Truro track and field team wins ANS championship for the first time
TRURO, N.S. – The Truro Lions recently captured their first indoor provincial championship.
The final medal haul from the Athletics Nova Scotia indoor track and field championships was 29 gold, 19 silver and 13 bronze for 779 points, 18 points better than seocnd-place Pictou County Athletics.
“This was a huge endeavour for our little club,” club manager and coach Sherry Alexander said. “We did not anticipate being able to top PCA, the largest club in the province, or any of the Halifax area teams. But as the meet progressed and results were updated it became an exciting, yet friendly rivalry between clubs.”
The championships were held at the Canada Games Centre in Halifax and
Truro’s Cougar Dome.
With just 27 members competing this year, Truro was one of the smallest teams, but new training facilities gave them the edge.
“We just simply didn’t have the opportunity in the past, but with the Cougar Dome facility and (Ratheastlink Community Centre) we now have training options for our athletes and are able to offer this program,” Alexander said. “This is why investing in infrastructure is important to a community, particularly the work of the (Truro Amateur Athletics Clubs) Revitalization Project.”
