Marigold Cultural Centre sees seating dismantled, new ones installed
For hours, trucks and trailers rolled up to the door, and loaded up on seats.
Marigold Cultural Centre had 204 theatre seats up for grabs, and there was quite a bit of interest.
Close to 40 of those seats will find a new home installed at the Truro Curling Club, and Gary Westoll was on site early Monday to haul them away.
“We have theatre seating on the lower level at the club – about two rows – and they date back more than 40 years,” he said. “We will be replacing those seats with these.”
While he waited for a crew of four men with Precision Office Assemblies to dismantle the pieces, he said the opportunity to obtain the seats was something the curling club wanted to take advantage of.
“We see it as an opportunity to move on up. The ones we have are getting pretty shaky. When we heard the Marigold was getting rid of the seats, it piqued our interest.”
He said the seats are “virtually the same” as the current ones installed, but would likely be newer.
Westoll said the old ones will be taken out and these installed sometime over the next month or two.
Along with the curling club, there were 42 other people signed up for seats, many of whom had one common theme in mind.
“I built a big theatre in my basement, and most of the equipment also came from an old theatre,” said Dave Rector, of Great Village.
For the past three years, Rector’s had a couch for seating, and was hoping to score at least eight, if not 10, to install.
“It really depends on how big they are,” he said.
In the end, all seats found new homes and installation started on the new seating. The project, which also included renovations to the centre’s bathrooms, was expected to cost around $120,000, with half the funding provided through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program. The Marigold was responsible for the remaining $60,000.
