Construction is underway on a strip mall at the Truro Power Centre.

Millbrook First Nation Chief Bob Gloade said there are three buildings in the works, the first having 5,000 square feet total within four spaces.

“We wanted to start with the few smaller buildings first. Along the side where Leon’s is, there are three buildings going up there,” he said.

The band already has one tenant in place for the strip mall, with PDI Engineering Group Inc. relocating to the site.

“We are still working on contracts for others, but we wanted to put our focus to building it first, then lease out the space as we go along,” said the chief.

Over the last couple of years, Gloade said a number of people have approached the band looking for office or retail space.

“But we didn’t really have anything,” he said. “There were a few larger buildings and we were looking at options of subdividing the larger buildings, but we think we have those filled.”

He said the band then started to consider building the strip mall with smaller spaces “to accommodate other tenants.”

When the first building is complete, a second one, with 7,500 square feet, will be next, followed by a third.

“Our hope is that when the need is there, we will continue out into a U-shape,” he said.

With mostly a winter build for the strip mall, Gloade said the earliest any space would be available for lease would be January 2017.
