Truro senior thrilled to have veggies back after they were stolen from community garden.

We take it back. Turns out, the beet cops were on the job after all.

And that has Olga Cain-McCabe pleased as punch.

“We’ll have a feed of beets tonight,” the Truro senior said happily, after calling the Truro Daily News to report her stolen beets had been returned.

At least, she’s pretty sure they’re her beets.

Cain-McCabe was featured in a story published Tuesday about having her beets stolen last week from the community garden on King Street. And how they made their way back to her dinner table is pretty amazing.

Monday night, Truro Police Const. Kelly Quinn arrested a highly intoxicated man, spotted weaving in and out of traffic on a bike.

Chief David MacNeil says when Quinn attempted to pull him over, the man threw a plastic bag over the railing of the Salmon River bridge.

Securing him in the cruiser, Quinn made her way down the embankment to locate the bag, and determine why it was so important for the suspect to part with it.

“It turned out, it was a bag full of beets,” MacNeil said.

Having no reports of stolen produce, she discarded them.

Then the story came out in Tuesday’s newspaper. When Quinn saw it, she returned to the site, retrieved the beets, tracked down Cain-McCabe and delivered them.

Cain-McCabe said she never reported the theft to police – she was sure they had more important matters to deal with. And while she has no definite proof the recovered beets are the ones she lost, the nine bunches that were found are just shy of the number stolen.

MacNeil hasn’t had any other reports of stolen beets, either, and he offered kudos to Quinn for going back on her own time to retrieve them. So too did Cain-McCabe. “I was really glad to get them back,” she said, extending thanks to Quinn.

“I was really surprised. I said, ‘my heavens, I never expected that.’”

Beet that.
