Scammell to attend Hockey Canada U-18 selection camp

CalGary Julia Scammell is among 43 players attending Hockey Canada’s under18 selection camp in Calgary from Aug. 7 to 14.

The defenceman from Murray Siding will participat­e in practices and intra-squad games, as well as off-ice dryland training, fitness testing and classroom sessions.

Scammell is vying for one of 23 spots on the national under-18 team, which will play a three-game series against the United States Aug. 18 to 21 in Calgary.

Bedford’s Troy Ryan is the head coach and Brette Pettet of Kentville is vying for a spot at forward.

Following the series, Hockey Canada scouts and the team’s coaching staff will continue to evaluate players with their provincial and club teams during the 2016-17 season, before selecting the Canadian team that will compete at the world championsh­ip, Jan. 7 to 14 in Prerov and Zlin, Czech Republic.

Players are also eligible to be selected for Canada’s national women’s team senior events throughout the 2016-17 season.

Earlier this month, Scammell attended the IIHF Women’s High Performanc­e Cup – a week-long camp in Vierumaki, Finland.

She also attended her second Hockey Canada strength and conditioni­ng camp in May in Hamilton, Ont.

Scammell will skate with the Northern Subway Selects of the Nova Scotia female midget AAA league this season before heading off to the University of New Hampshire in 2017.
