Canadian Junior Angus Show being held in N.S.

BiBle Hill Samantha Rafuse doesn’t just show cattle, she makes friends with them.

Attending the Canadian Junior Angus Show this week, she’s accompanied by a very friendly red Angus, named Molly.

“She’s been in shows before and she’s pretty good to show,” said the 14-year-old. “Shows are fun because you don’t know how you’ll get placed, even if you’re sure your animal is the best.”

Howard Pyne, who owns Molly, suggested her as a show animal for Rafuse, who also shows one of his Simmentals in 4-H.

“I have a dairy cow home but she’s just a pet,” Rafuse said. “Once halter-broke these animals are easy to work with. I grow pretty attached to them.”

Pyne, who has Harmony Ridge Farm, spends six hours a

week with the 4-H youth, teaching them everything he can about handling and caring for cattle.

“He wants us to learn something new every time,” said Rafuse. “He’s helped us a lot.”

Pyne is also fond of the cattle and said he won’t be sending them to slaughter.

As well as showing Molly, Rafuse will be competing in photography, scrapbooking, public speaking, and possibly judging, during the show.

This is the first time the Canadian Junior Angus Show has been held in Nova Scotia and young people from across the country are taking part. Members of the public are welcome to drop by the Agridome, on the exhibition grounds in Bible Hill, to see the cattle and displays and to chat with the participants.
